    Trong một thế giới mà sự bất bình đẳng đang đe dọa sự tồn vong của mọi xã hội, khả năng điều hòa những mâu thuẫn và đòi hỏi đa dạng giữa những nhóm có quan điểm và lợi ích khác nhau sẽ trở nên vô cùng quan trọng. Mọi vấn đề hay giải pháp đều hàm chứa cả những khía cạnh được và mất, vì thế rất nhiều quyết định phải dựa trên cơ sở chấp nhận đánh đổi. Hiểu mối tương quan, tác động qua lại giữa những ý tưởng hay logic trái ngược, cân nhắc cả những quan điểm ngắn hạn và dài hạn, sẽ là đòi hỏi của những năm tháng sắp tới để con người không đi đến chỗ diệt vong..

    Cuối cùng là khả năng chịu trách nhiệm. Xã hội càng phức tạp thì càng khó vận hành nếu chỉ với các quy định của pháp luật, vì không thể quy định hết được những gì mà mỗi cá nhân được phép hay không được phép làm. Giáo dục cần chuẩn bị cho người học tinh thần trách nhiệm, theo nghĩa có khả năng cân nhắc trước hậu quả của mỗi việc mình làm với người khác, có thể dự đoán rủi ro hay lợi ích mà hành động đó mang lại cho xã hội, chứ không chỉ cho bản thân và hành động phù hợp với lợi ích chung của xã hội. Đằng sau cách xử sự có trách nhiệm với xã hội, mỗi chúng ta còn cần nhận thức sâu sắc về sự gắn bó giữa lợi ích và an toàn của cá nhân với xã hội. Sự trưởng thành về mặt đạo đức, trí tuệ và cảm xúc đòi hỏi chúng ta tự vấn mọi hành động của mình dưới lăng kính các chuẩn mực xã hội, giá trị, ý nghĩa và giới hạn. Đó chính là những thứ đã khiến chúng ta trở thành người và phân biệt chúng ta với máy móc hay trí thông minh nhân tạo. Nó là tiền đề để mỗi cá nhân đạt được năng lực tự điều chỉnh, tự kiểm soát và thích nghi. Nó trở nên quan trọng hơn bao giờ hết trong một thế giới mà mức độ tương thuộc ngày càng cao và khả năng tàn phá của con người là ngoài sức tưởng tượng.

For the study, the researchers examined recordings of 8,719 codas from around 60 whales collected by the Dominica Sperm Whale Project between 2005 and 2018, using a mix of AI algorithms for pattern recognition and classification. The AI then turned the clicks within the coda data into a new kind of data visualization called an exchange plot, revealing that some codas featured extra clicks. These extra clicks, combined with variations in the duration of their calls, appeared in interactions between multiple whales, which they say suggests that codas can carry more information and possess a more complicated internal structure than we had previously believed.

The team’s next step is to build language models of whale calls and to examine how those calls relate to different behaviors. They also plan to work on a more universal system that could be used across species, says Sharma. Taking a communication system we know nothing about, working out how it encodes and transmits information, and slowly beginning to understand what’s being communicated could have many purposes beyond whales. “I think we’re just starting to understand some of these things,” she says. “We’re very much at the beginning, but we are slowly making our way through.”

Volunteering offers many of the same social benefits, with the added bonus of helping others and developing useful skills to put on your CV. Plus, students are in a unique position to help, suggests Tom Fox.
