There are already many, many people who have passed the landmark age of 100. In fact, there are now so many healthy, elderly people that there’s a name for them: the wellderly. These are people over the age of eighty who have no major illnesses, such as high blood pressure, heart disease or diabetes.

There are many scientific studies of communities where healthy old age is typical. These include places like Calabria in southern Italy and the island of Okinawa in Japan. In Calabria, the small village of Molochio has about 2,000 inhabitants. And of these, there are at least eight people over a hundred years old. When researchers ask people like this the secret of their long life, the answer is almost always about food and is almost always the same: ‘I eat a lot of fruit and vegetables.’ ‘I eat a little bit of everything.’ ‘I neither smoke nor drink.’

In the past, scientists looked at things such as diet and lifestyle for an explanation of long life, but these days they are also looking at genetics. Researcher Eric Topol says that there must be genes that explain why people are protected from the effects of aging process. The new research into long life did scrutinize groups of people who have a genetic connection. One interesting group lives in Ecuador. In one area of the country there are a number of people with the same genetic condition. It’s called Laron syndrome. These people don’t grow very tall – just over one metre. But Laron syndrome also give them protection against cancer and diabetes. As a result, they live longer than other people in their families. Meanwhile, on the Hawaiian island of Oahu, there’s another group of long-lived men, Japanese-Americans. They have a similar gene to the Laron syndrome group.

Back in Calabria, researchers constructed the family trees of the 100-year-old people. They looked at family information from the 19th century to today. It is concluded that there are genetic factors that give health benefits to the men. This is a surprising result because generally in Europe, women live longer than men. So what really makes people live longer? It seems likely that it is an interaction of genes, the environment and probably a third factor – luck.

Unlike good studiers who employ a variety of study skills in a flexible yet purposeful manner, low-achieving students use a restricted range of study skills. They cannot explain why good study strategies are important for learning; and they tend to use the same, often ineffective study approach for all learning tasks, ignoring task content, structure or difficulty.

Cơn sốt giá gạo chấm dứt

Mới đây, bà Bùi Thị Thanh Tâm - Chủ tịch HĐTV Tổng công ty Lương thực miền Bắc (Vinafood 1) - chia sẻ, các nhà xuất khẩu Việt Nam đã trúng gần 400.000 tấn gạo trong gói thầu 500.000 tấn của Indonesia.

Indonesia là khách hàng lớn thứ hai của gạo Việt Nam. Gần đây, giá gạo tại thị trường này tăng mạnh do nguồn cung khan hiếm. Tính tới 2/2024, quốc gia này đã trải qua 8 tháng thâm hụt gạo liên tiếp. Do đó, Chính phủ Indonesia phải tăng hạn ngạch thêm 1,6 triệu tấn, nâng tổng lượng gạo nhập khẩu năm 2024 lên 3,6 triệu tấn. Đến nay, El Nino diễn biến phức tạp, còn Ấn Độ vẫn duy trì lệnh cấm xuất khẩu gạo trắng non-basmati. Nguồn cung gạo trên toàn cầu tiếp tục bị ảnh hưởng.

Ông Nguyễn Văn Đôn - Giám đốc Công ty TNHH Việt Hưng - cho biết, các đối tác lớn như Philippines, Indonesia, Trung Quốc. đều thông báo tăng khối lượng nhập khẩu gạo trong năm nay. Tuy nhiên, giá gạo xuất khẩu của Việt Nam không còn “thăng hoa” như nửa năm vừa qua. Theo Hiệp hội Lương thực Việt Nam (VFA), từ tháng 2 đến nay, giá các loại gạo xuất khẩu của nước ta quay đầu giảm mạnh.

Ngày 5/3/2024, giá gạo 5% tấm xuất khẩu của Việt Nam giao dịch ở mức 579 USD/tấn, giảm 84 USD/tấn so với mức đỉnh. Còn so với ngày 19/7/2023 (thời điểm trước khi gạo sốt giá trên toàn cầu), giá gạo hiện nay chỉ cao hơn 46 USD/tấn. Đáng chú ý, thay vì có giá đắt đỏ nhất trong top quốc gia xuất khẩu lớn trong suốt một thời gian, nay gạo 5% tấm của Việt Nam thấp hơn hàng cùng loại của Thái Lan và Pakistan lần lượt là 34 USD/tấn và 20 USD/tấn.

Gạo 25% tấm xuất khẩu của nước ta cũng giảm còn 557 USD/tấn, thấp hơn 4-5 USD/tấn so với hàng cùng loại của Thái Lan và Pakistan. Giá gạo xuất khẩu lao dốc đã kéo giá lúa tại thị trường nội địa giảm từ giữa tháng 1/2024, từ 9.000 đồng/kg còn 7.300-7.800 đồng/kg. Mức giảm sâu của giá gạo xuất khẩu trái ngược hoàn toàn với các dự báo trước đó của chuyên gia, doanh nghiệp cũng như cơ quan chức năng. Một số ý kiến cho rằng cơn sốt giá gạo đã chấm dứt.
