UNEMPLOYMENT IN VIETNAM

    Unemployment is a growing concern in Vietnam, particularly among young graduates. The rapid expansion of the labor market has not kept pace with the increasing number of students completing higher education. According to recent statistics, the youth unemployment rate is nearly 20%, which poses challenges for the economy and society. Many young people struggle to find jobs that match their skills and qualifications.

    Additionally, the COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated the situation, leading to layoffs and reduced hiring across various sectors. Industries such as tourism and hospitality have been hit hard, with many businesses closing or operating at limited capacity. This has resulted in a significant loss of jobs, especially for those in the informal sector.

    To combat unemployment, the Vietnamese government is implementing various initiatives. These include vocational training programs aimed at equipping young people with practical skills that are in demand in the labor market. Furthermore, the government is encouraging entrepreneurship by providing financial support and resources for start-ups.

    Technology is vital in tackling unemployment issues. Online job portals and social media platforms have become valuable tools for job seekers, allowing them to connect with potential employers more easily. Additionally, remote work opportunities have expanded, enabling individuals to access jobs beyond their local area.

    Despite the challenges, there is hope for the future. As the economy recovers and diversifies, new job opportunities are expected to arise. Continuous investment in education and skill development will be key to reducing unemployment rates in the long term.

1. Like many emergency responders, Nicholas Groom is used to stress at work.  On the one hand, the stress can be helpful. “I find that when attending a serious incident, it helps me to maintain focus on the situation,” Nicholas Groom said. On the other hand, the work can be highly pressurized. “Too much stress can impair your ability to make decisions,” he adds. And Groom is not alone in his complicated relationship with stress.

2. Many people believe that there should be a balanced amount of stress. In other words, not too much stress so you’re not overwhelmed but not too little stress so you don’t feel unmotivated. After all, some anxiety is motivating; think of the adrenaline before a deadline or the excitement before a competition.  Sports fans sometimes even talk about a “gene” in some athletes who seem to play best in the decisive final moments of a match. Furthermore, many psychologists claim that performance in many situations increases with stress up to a point. Of course, any stress can cause harm when it’s prolonged. To take just one example, a long-term high heart rate is linked to cardiovascular diseases. And additional stressors, such as financial pressures or psychiatric issues, clearly affect how beneficially someone can respond to stress.  

3. So is there a way to harness stress to your advantage while being mindful of its detrimental long-term effects? One key factor is to avoid, whenever possible, the point when stress leads to mental and physical collapse. Crystal Wernicke, 30, has always used stress as a motivator. But juggling between parenting, a full-time job, a voluntary role and financial troubles at the same time became too much and eventually led to a two-month period of illness. Another factor is the presence of control. For those who feel powerless over their situation, stress is unlikely to be beneficial. But with some autonomy over stressful tasks, we are better able to convert that pressure into higher performance.

4. When it comes to stress and how it affects your performance, it’s helpful to recognize the variations in personality, type of stress and task that affect the level of pressure you are under, as well as understanding tools you can use to control and harness that stress. Ultimately, it’s not helpful to take a one-sided view, either demonizing or glorifying stress. As James C Quick, a management professor at the University of Texas, sums up: “Stress can be the kiss of death as well as the spice of life.”

(1) Năm 1858, thực dân Pháp tiến hành cuộc chiến tranh xâm lược nước ta. Sau gần nửa thế kỷ bình định về quân sự, đến khoảng đầu thế kỷ XX, chúng mới thực sự khai thác thuộc địa về kinh tế. Sau hai cuộc khai thác thuộc địa (lần thứ nhất từ năm 1897 đến năm 1914, lần thứ 2 từ năm 1919 đến năm 1929), cơ cấu xã hội Việt Nam có những biến đổi sâu sắc. Một số thành phố công nghiệp ra đời, đô thị, thị trấn mọc lên ở nhiều nơi. Những giai cấp, tầng lớp xã hội mới: tư sản, tiểu tư sản (viên chức, học sinh, những người buôn bán hay sản xuất nhỏ,…), công nhân, dân nghèo thành thị,...xuất hiện ngày càng đông đảo. Một lớp công chúng có đời sống tinh thần và thị hiếu mới đã hình thành đòi hỏi một thứ văn chương mới.

(2) Từ đầu thế kỷ XX, văn hóa Việt Nam dần dần thoát khỏi ảnh hưởng của văn hóa phong kiến Trung Hoa, bắt đầu mở rộng tiếp xúc với văn hóa phương Tây mà chủ yếu là văn hóa Pháp. Luồng văn hóa mới thông qua tầng lớp trí thức Tây học (phần lớn là tiểu tư sản) ngày càng thấm sâu vào ý thức và tâm hồn người cầm bút cũng như người đọc sách.

(3) Đến đầu thế kỷ XX, chữ quốc ngữ đã thay thế chữ Hán, chữ Nôm trong nhiều lĩnh vực, từ hành chính công vụ tới văn chương nghệ thuật. Chữ quốc ngữ được phổ biến rộng rãi đã tạo điều kiện thuận lợi cho công chúng tiếp xúc với sách báo. Nhu cầu văn hóa của lớp công chúng mới đã làm nảy sinh những hoạt động kinh doanh văn hóa, làm cho nghề in, nghề xuất bản,, nghề làm báo theo kỹ thuật hiện đại phát triển khá mạnh. Viết văn cũng trở thành một nghề kiếm sống tuy rất khó khăn, chật vật.

(4) Những nhân tố trên đã tạo điều kiện cho văn học Việt Nam đổi mới theo hướng hiện đại hóa. Hiện đại hóa ở đây được hiểu là quá trình làm cho văn học thoát ra khỏi hệ thống thi pháp văn học trung đại và đổi mới theo hình thức văn học phương Tây, có thể hội nhập với nền văn học hiện đại trên thế giới.
