Foot-racing is a popular activity in the United States. It is seen not only as a competitive sport but also as a way to exercise, to enjoy the camaraderie of like-minded people, and to donate money to a good cause. Though serious runners may spend months training to compete, other runners and walkers might not train at all. Those not competing to win might run in an effort to beat their own time or simply to enjoy the fun and exercise. People of all ages, from those of less than one year (who may be pushed in strollers) to those in their eighties, enter into this sport. The races are held on city streets, on college campuses, through parks, and in suburban areas, and they are commonly 5 to 10 kilometers in length.
The largest footrace in the world is the 12-kilometer Bay to Breakers race that is held in San Francisco every spring. This race begins on the east side of the city near San Francisco Bay and ends on the west side at the Pacific Ocean. There may be 80,000 or more people running in this race through the streets and hills of San Francisco. In the front are the serious runners who compete to win and who might finish in as little as 34 minutes. Behind them are the thousands who take several hours to finish. In the back of the race are those who dress in costumes and come just for fun. One year there was a group of men who dressed like Elvis Presley, and another group consisted of firefighters who were tied together in a long line and who were carrying a fire-hose. There was even a bridal party, in which the bride was dressed in a long white gown and the groom wore a tuxedo. The bride and groom threw flowers to bystanders, and they were actually married at some point along the route. The main purpose of this passage is to _________.

FITNESS TRENDS
[I] Reformer Pilates is an advanced and more intense variation of traditional Pilates. [II] Since this type of equipment isn’t something you would typically have at home, you’ll need to visit a specialized Pilates center to try it. [III] While it might look easy at first, don’t be fooled - by the end of the session, your thighs will be burning, and you might struggle to walk up or down stairs for a few days afterward. [IV] This workout pushes your body to its limits, providing a more challenging experience than standard Pilates, and many find it an effective way to build both strength and flexibility.
Trampolining is another popular fitness trend, and although it may seem like child's play, it’s actually a highly effective workout. Jumping up and down on a trampoline can leave you feeling exhausted after just a few minutes. Surprisingly, it’s even better for heart health than running, while also improving coordination and helping to reduce stress levels. Trampolining is gaining widespread popularity, with new centers popping up that feature as many as 150 trampolines. These facilities offer options for everyone: you can enjoy 'freejumping, where you bounce without an instructor, or pay for professional lessons to learn the best techniques and get the most out of your workout. Many people are discovering that trampolining combines fun and fitness in a way that makes staying active much more enjoyable.
If you're someone who is typically active but feeling down or emotionally drained, Dynamic Running Therapy might be just what the doctor ordered. This trend involves running with a therapist, combining the benefits of physical exercise with talk therapy. Though these sessions are often more expensive than typical therapy sessions because of the professional fees, they offer significant advantages. Running while talking helps distract you from any discomfort, allowing you to cover longer distances, and creates a relaxed, open environment that can make it easier to talk compared to the usual therapist’s office setting.

Read the following passage about food addiction and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the best answer to each of the following questions from 31 to 40.
Few people would disagree that one of the world's most popular dishes is pizza. Twenty-two-year-old Zack certainly wouldn't. He would eat a variety of pizza-based items, including homemade pizza, precooked microwave pizza, and even pizza leftovers from the night before. He was consuming 800kg of pizza a year. As a child, Zack had eaten a wide variety of food. But he became addicted to pizza when he started secondary school. American school meals have often been criticised for the large amount of fast food present on the menu, and pizza is the star dish. Zack even spent all his pocket money on slices of pizza.
Naturally, Zack's family worried about his high-calorie, low-vitamin diet. So did Zack. In an attempt to break his addiction, Zack agreed to appear on a TV programme called Freaky Eaters. Its aim was to encourage food addicts to beat their addictions with the help of a psychologist and nutritionist. It wasn't easy. He had to eat a fish dish, while his brother sat in front of him enjoying... a pizza! However, Zack met the challenge and has never eaten pizza again.
Seventeen-year-old Stacy Irvine's friends visit her and discover that she has been rewarded thousands of free toys from fast food restaurants as a regular customer. Stacy's mother often gave her two-year-old girl a portion of fried chicken in a McDonald's restaurant. [I] Since then, Stacy has refused to eat anything else except for pieces of fried chicken, and as a result, her diet has created serious health. She has been warned that if she doesn't change her diet, she will die. [II] Stacy once collapsed due to lack of vitamins and nutrients and needed to be hospitalised. [III] She insisted that Stacy adopt a healthier lifestyle. However, worryingly, Stacy's mother said that while Stacy was beginning to understand the seriousness of her situation, she couldn't eat anything else but chicken nuggets. [IV]
Twenty-year-old Hanna Little was keen on chips. The only thing that Hanna consumed for fifteen years was one plate of chips after another. Not surprisingly, a diet that contained few nutrients and an excess of fat and carbohydrates could only have negative consequences. And it did because not only did Hanna develop health problems, but she also had to leave her job after collapsing at work. At five, Hanna became addicted to chips and refused to eat fruits and vegetables despite her mother's efforts. Hanna says that she was terrified of tasting the flavour of different types of food and she would feel anxious just at the idea of doing it. Parties, picnics and barbecues with friends and family used to be a nightmare. Furthermore, Hanna was soon seen as 'odd' by her friends' parents.
It wasn't until the age of sixteen that Hanna realised she had Selective Eating Disorder (SED). Despite this new knowledge, no solution was found. It wasn't until she lost her job before she started eating normally. Hanna sought therapy from psychologist Felix Economakis, who used hypnosis, a treatment that none of the doctors that she had seen before had mentioned, to get her to eat fruit after one one-hour session, and since then she has been willing to eat anything.... including chips!
